VIOLIN TEACHER CAPE TOWN

cape town violin teacher

My name is Femke from the Netherlands and I will be delighted to become your violin teacher!

Learning to play the violin and to enjoy the beauty of music is one of the best gifts you can give your child or yourself. The fun, the challenge, the stimulation, the required discipline and of course a very enthusiastic and devoted teacher introduces you to the world of wonders called, music.

Just moved from the Netherlands I am excited to have started a violin class here in Cape Town. Besides giving violin lessons at the Hout Bay Music Project to children of Imizamu Yethu, I also teach from my own home in Hout Bay, close to Constantia and Cape Town.

I welcome students of all ages. The students that I teach range from beginners to advanced players. I use a variety of classical teaching methods depending on the level of each particular student. For younger students I am an advocate of the Suzuki method. Developed by Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki, this method is founded on the premise that all children are born with a natural ability to play and enjoy music. Students can begin violin lessons through the Suzuki Method as early as the age of three. The Suzuki method is a fun and stimulating way for children to learn music, useful not only to achieve extremely high standards of violin playing but also to build and guide character development and concentration skills in young children:

Suzuki: Teaching music is not the main purpose! If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart!

For beginners, the lesson can be started from an absolutely basic level. For pupils who are in higher grades, I normally concentrate on a wide scope of musical training with the emphasis not just on playing in a 'correct' manner, but also focusing on performing technique, musical interpretation, sight reading, music theory and ensemble playing techniques.

Biography

Born in the Netherlands, I began to play the violin at the age of 8. When I turned 10 I joined the Haydn Youth String Orchestra and got the great opportunity to tour around the world. As a twelve year old girl I joined the youth talent class of the Dutch Conservatory. This was a very inspiring time where I got the chance to meet and play with a lot of gifted and ambitious musicians. It was with my best friends that we started a string quartet and won the first price of the prestigious Princess Christina Concours. Besides my music studies I obtained my masters degree in History. After my studies I got a great job as music marketeer at the Concert hall in Leiden and started giving violin lessons on the side. In 2010 my partner and I got a great chance to move to South Africa! We found our new home in Hout Bay and I got involved in the Hout Bay Music Project, teaching children from the township Imizamu Yethu the violin. Now I have started my own violin class and am enjoying it and appreciating it intensely to teach children the violin and music.
